...and the amazement turned into anger....

About two years had passed since her initiation ceremony, and the authorities, both religious and otherwise, had been struck by Jezebel's charisma and how well-known and beloved she was, despite being so young and half-blooded. They were enthusiastic about her in words, but in reality, she was feared, especially given the prospect of her growing up. They all began to boycott her, contain her, limit her, downplay her... and... last but not least, to fan the flames of jealousy among the novices.

The end result was that, while all the other novices of the same rank were now daily engaged in the activities of priestly life, Jezebel was almost devoid of duties, and it was not uncommon for her to spend entire days wandering, reading, studying... or so the authorities and members of the priestly order thought, all happy to have her contained and under control, but they were wrong.

Immediately after the ceremony, Jezebel had felt a strong call from the Divine. She was convinced that her life had an unusual and powerful purpose. She felt increasingly like a chosen one, and she sensed that there was a specific reason, a purpose, a mission for which God had chosen her.

She had used her enormous amount of time and resources to devote herself to reading sacred texts, particularly those deemed inappropriate for teaching young novices. She didn't even know what she was looking for, but she clearly felt that the path was right, so much so that, after exhausting the monastery's available texts, she convinced her superior to intercede and have texts sent directly from the capital.

All this study activity was approved by the entire order, if only because (they thought) it distracted Jezebel, already so "intrusive" from "earthly" things, apart, of course, from the occasional "recreational" moment granted to some priests.

One day, Jezebel stumbled upon a very ancient text that immediately caught her attention. It was little known or cited by the high priests, and not even mentioned in the basic curriculum. Yet a quick reading of a few random pages was enough for Jezebel to grasp its importance: it was a book of magic, but unlike the ones taught, which focused primarily on dialogue with otherworldly creatures, this one also focused on very practical aspects of everyday life. In particular, it contained a wealth of knowledge relating to the human body and some healing spells for common and unusual ailments.

But there was something even more extraordinary: Not only were there healing spells for most of the most common ailments of the time, but there was a veritable "guide" of criteria to use to create further spells for new or as yet unknown ailments.

At the beginning of reading the book, Jezebel was simply astonished, incredulous that such a wealth of knowledge was simply ignored, but as she mastered the art, she understood the reason, and her astonishment turned to anger.

For reasons unknown even to the authors of the text, even though these spells could be activated and managed by men, their effectiveness increased dramatically if performed by a woman. It's not that there were any intolerable impediments or discrimination against women at the time, who on average enjoyed far greater freedoms than other known populations, but that, like other known civilizations, was still a patriarchal society in which men were still dominant.

But there was more: since the criteria for creating spells that acted on the human body were taught, it was clear that these techniques could potentially be used not only to heal, but also to harm the body, so the construction of actual magical "weapons" in the form of spells was conceivable.

It was easy to understand why this knowledge had been suppressed in its infancy: It would have been a mortal threat to the patriarchy.
